Baby + Co

What is Baby+Company? Baby+Company is a growing network of birth centers that offer a new kind of pregnancy and birth experience built for a woman and her family. We bring together the best elements of highly personalized care along with the benefits of partnership with a leading local health system and physician practice. Our highly skilled staff, led by Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), spend the time it takes during our moms' pregnancies to build close relationships with them and their families. We develop customized care plans that address all of our patient's health needs and are available 24/7. When it’s time for baby to arrive, our team is by their side throughout labor and birth in our birthing suites or arrange care at the hospital whenever needed.

To complement our clinical care, we offer wellness services and classes including healthy pregnancy workshops, childbirth education, breastfeeding and newborn classes, and a new mom’s group.

What is the mission of Baby + Co? Our mission is to reset the standard of maternity care by growing a model that supports, educates, and celebrates the wellness of pregnancy. Our center combine the highest quality clinical care, concierge service and the best comforts of home. We also offer a full range of wellness and educational services including: well woman services (annuals, pap smears, birth control), fertility counseling, childbirth and newborn education, prenatal fitness, nutritional counseling, new mom discussion groups, lactation support and more.

How many locations does Baby + Co. have and where is it headquartered?  Baby+Company operates a network of 4 birth centers in partnership with leading health systems, with another location scheduled to open in January 2017. Two Baby+Company centers call North Carolina home. In Charlotte, our center is located in Elizabeth neighborhood, just a few minutes south of Uptown. We work in collaboration with Novant Health and in close proximity to Presbyterian Medical Center. Our Central Support team is located in Cary, NC and is focused on promoting our mission while simultaneously allowing each center to grow and focus on its local roots. Our support team provides each center the ability to concentrate solely on patient care and good outcomes, which is the foundation that midwifery care is known for.

What sets you apart from the rest?  More and more families are choosing to welcome their babies in birth centers, and for good reason. Research shows that childbirth is easier and safer when women have continuous supportive care throughout pregnancy and birth and when the environment is designed for comfort, privacy, and movement in labor. This is just what birth centers like Baby+Company offer.

Hospitals offer needed technology and specialized care for women with risk factors or complications. At Baby+Company, our birth center is closely integrated with Novant Health, so that healthy women can benefit from continuous midwifery care in our calm and comfortable environment, with seamless access to the hospital and physician care whenever it is needed.

Our kind of collaborative care, based in midwife-led birth centers with direct linkages to partner hospitals, has impressive results. A study published in 2013, which included more than 15,500 women who received care in 79 midwife-led birth centers in the United States, found that just 6 percent of women required a cesarean birth compared with nearly 24 percent of similarly low-risk women cared for in hospital settings, with excellent outcomes for both mothers and babies. Large studies in other countries have shown similar results, and in the United Kingdom, new national guidelines urge all healthy women to strongly consider midwife-led birth center care.

What classes do you provide (pre and postnatal)? An integral part of delivering at the birth center is the education and preparation during pregnancy. Our classes are small, intimate, and highly interactive, allowing families to get to know other new and expectant parents. Childbirth, newborn care, and breastfeeding classes are available and encouraged during prenatal care.

For postpartum support, we have a very active New Moms Group, which is a six week series dedicated to new mom education and fostering a motherhood community for all. Each week, an expert joins to offer a useful resource or tool to moms that will support them further in their journey. Classes are open to everyone – birth center clients and community families.

We also develop partnerships in the area to provide classes, workshops, and series led by outside experts. In this way, we nurture relationships and develop resources that enable families to actively engage in their health care education and decisions.

What is the labor experience like at Baby + Co. What types of things do you provide? Our personalized prenatal care options encourage each expecting mom to develop the birth experience she wants, so no labor looks the same! Our Midwives follow the laboring mom’s lead, tending to her birth as it unfolds over time. Moms have a lot of freedom in labor; however, there are aspects that are certain and guaranteed for every mom:

Every mom will develop meaningful relationships with each midwife during her prenatal care and give birth surrounded by familiar faces in a comfortable, familiar place. She will be free to do what her body tells her to do – whether it’s walking, soaking in a warm tub, or nibbling on snacks for energy. She will have access to ample amounts of comfort measures including deep soaker tubs that women can labor and give birth in (water and hydrotherapy is called the “midwife’s epidural”), walk-in showers, birth stools, nitrous oxide, TENS unit, rebozo, birth/peanut balls, pressure point therapy, and Swedish bars. She will wear her own clothes and have complete control over who will be with her during birth. No limitations. We aim to provide a mom with options, so she can personalize her experience to fit her family’s needs.

Are you affiliated with a hospital? Shortly explain how you are connected? Yes, we work in collaboration with Novant Health and are located in close proximity to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center. Clinical excellence and safety are first and foremost, and our clinical care is led by our Certified Nurse Midwives with clinical consultation from our Medical Director, Dr. Chris Morris, and Novant Health Providence OB/GYN. Our Midwives provide highly personalized care and are available 24x7 in person, via email, or for scheduled video appointments. We partner with leading hospitals and health systems like Novant Health to provide a seamless transition to medical services as needed, ensuring continuity of care for our patients before, during and after birth.

Why Charlotte?  Why not Charlotte?! Charlotte was an easy pick for us when deciding on Baby+Company locations. As the city grew and welcomed newcomers from all areas of the country, it became more and more evident that this option in maternity care was heavily desired by families in and around the city of Charlotte. With the expansive growth taking place, we are seeing advances in so many fields and a change in how families engage with the health care system. Charlotte women are asking more questions about their health choices and researching the topics that are important to them and their pregnancy. Coupled with our positive relationship with NC insurance payers and Novant Health, it was apparent that Charlotte families were ready and waiting for a midwife-led birth center.
